Art Is Power: Glenn Ligon



Glenn Ligon is an American conceptual artist whose work explores race, language, desire, and identity.  His work is on display at Regen Projects in Los Angeles, and Yvon Lambert Galley in Paris, France. More information and photos of his work after the jump...

Born and raised in the Bronx in 1960, this Wesleyan University graduated and now works in New York City. He got his first solo show "How It Feels To Be Colored Me" in Brooklyn in 1989, and here he gained a reputation as an artist who created large, text-bases painting in which a phrase chosen from literature or other sources is repeated over and over, eventually dissipating into murk. Ligon's work is greatly informed by his experiences as an African American gay man in the United States. In 2009, President Barack Obama added Ligon's 1992 "Black Like Me No. 2" to the White House Collection. Looking at his work, it is evident that Lupe Fiasco gained influence from him and chose his work to create the album cover for his most recent album "Lasers" Check the photos out below...
